Petropavslovsk-Kamchatsky

Today begins with several bad surprises. Over night the Russian Civil Aviation Authority has changed our before approved flight plan along the Kuril Islands. Now we must fly much further on a north- westerly route and that is: five hours across 10°C cold water in the single engine airplane. Our survival dry suits and thermo suits plus the life raft on the front seat row make life in a cockpit uncomfortable narrow even for a married couple. Additionally the weather forecast in the morning is much worse than anticipated in the evening. Further, on this long distance our ferry tank comes into use. The kit has been installed by Röder Präzision and approved based on a STC by the German CAA. The ferry tank is needed, because we land in Petropavlovsk an airport that has no AVGAS. So the fuel must also be sufficient for our onward trip to Magadan.

No street, no railway connects Petropavlovsk with mainland Russia. This place can only be reached by sea freighter or airplane.

Founded in 1740 by Vitus Bering and named after his ships Saint Peter and Paul, this location still is of strategic significance.
From no point in Petropavlovsk you can see the horizon. It is located in the middle of an active volcano countryside. The highest volcano is 4750 meters of height.

We decide a hiking tour near the Awatscha volcano which is only 40 km away from town. One does not need measures for reduced traffic speed here. At latest all three meters – mostly earlier - follows a pot hole that really deserves its name. Thus, we need 1.5 hours to the foot of the volcano in a 4W drive. Along a former flow of lava we start our mountain hiking. After a strenuous practice across stone fields we have to pass snow to reach the waterfall. Because there are more accidents with bears than with vehicles in Kamschatsky we are finally glad to not have seen any bear today. However, this countryside is unique and remains unforgotten.
