½ mile of visibility is the only pre-described requirement for an IFR takeoff at La Grande Riviere Airport. "Radio"-Tower co-ordinates the IFR clearance which deviates quite considerably from our flight plan: "You are cleared direct to Iqaluit, climb FL 190". This basically means 650 NM of direct flight route to the destination. After approx. 100 NM Montreal Centre requests that we shall make contact with them next time 120 NM prior reaching Iqaluit. More than 400 NM we are merely passing position reports on an Air-to-Air frequency - we are flying IFR in uncontrolled airspace. Below us only rock and water and very limited chances for emergency landings. Nunavut, the youngest Canadian federal state, accommodates more than half of the worldwide polar bear population – you better don’t mess around with these guys! It’s a bit like Siberia where you really wish to better not have any malfunction on your aircraft. Approx. 120 NM inbound Iqaluit we establish contact to the same controller of Montreal Centre again. The Approach to RW35 of CYFB across the fjord is impressively nice.
Arctic in summer. Without snow and ice all buildings look a little bit lost. From one town to the next there are mostly no streets on Baffin Island. Airplanes or boats are the only means of transportation. Into the tundra there are some 4-Wheel drive "roads" for hunters. It’s right here, where we experience the beauty of this untouched landscape.
